Red flags

When should you stop and call a professional?

Six signs that the problem is past DIY. Turn the system off and pick up the phone — running a system with these issues turns cheap repairs into expensive replacements.

  • Pet odor that comes back on humid days

Urine crystallized in the carpet pad rehydrates on humid mornings and releases ammonia. Surface cleaning won't reach it. Needs the full pet-odor protocol.

  • Water damage over 1 sq ft or longer than 4 hours

Mold activates at 48 hours. DIY extraction can't reach pad moisture. Call before hour 12 to save the carpet.

  • A stain that came back darker after DIY cleaning

Either wicking from the backing or residue attracting new soil. Professional extraction pulls it out of the backing, not just the surface.

  • A wool, silk, or antique rug with a fresh spill

Wrong pH or hot water shrinks wool and bleeds natural dyes. Blot only and call before treating.

  • Carpet that smells even when clean

Something trapped in the backing or pad — pet, mildew, or old cleaner residue. Identification and removal needed.

  • Move-out cleaning with pet history

Landlord UV inspection will find deposits the eye can't see. Full pet-odor protocol is the difference between deposit returned and deposit held.
