Rotate area rugs quarterly to prevent uneven wear
Traffic patterns wear one part of your rug faster than the rest. Rotation resets this.
What you'll learn
- How quarterly rotation evens wear across the rug face
- Why sun fade is uneven if the rug stays in one position
- How to rotate a large rug safely without stretching the backing
- When rotation isn't enough (and the rug needs cleaning)
Step by step
- Lift all furniture off the rug first.
- Grab two corners and fold the rug in half toward the center.
- Rotate 180 degrees (or 90 if your room layout allows quarter-turns).
- Unfold. Replace furniture.
- Make it a seasonal routine — every equinox and solstice is an easy reminder.
Safety note
Hand-knotted wool rugs in particular benefit from rotation. A rug at 20 years of rotation looks better than a rug at 10 years unrotated.
